Ah, western Tennessee. This song is about a real place and real memories of the first musical instrument I remember playing, the old pump organ at Grandma's House. I'll make the trip back and bring it to Oklahoma one of these days, Lord willing. Thanks for keeping it housed all these years sis.
LYRICS
On a hill in the backwoods far from anyplace you'd know
Is a white frame farmhouse where my family used to go
Pack a lunch and a pillow, six kids in a black sedan
Two days on the hot road
Can't wait till we finally land at
Grandma's house, used to be the place where the folks would gather
Grandma's house, with the chickens and the pigs and the cows in the hollar
Grandma's house, take me back 'cause I want to be there
Sitting on the old porch swing and listening to the organ grinding in the front room
At Grandma's house.
Feeding chickens in the backyard, living life right off the land
Fishing down in the Reelfoot, catching catfish seemed so grand
Take a hike to the meadow, past the barn and around the bend
Down the hill to the backstream, skinny dip and go back again to
Grandma's house, used to be the place where the folks would gather
Grandma's house, with the chickens and the pigs and the cows in the hollar
Grandma's house, take me back 'cause I want to be there
Sitting on the old porch swing and listening to the organ grinding in the front room
At Grandma's house.
Go to church on Sunday, sitting long on a hardwood pew
Singing songs about Jesus, how he's going to come back for you
Preacher man says "Satan, he's got a grip, got a hold on you,
So come down and repent young man!"
But I'd rather go back up to my
Grandma's house, where the love and the joy is overflowing
Grandma's house, where I feel so safe and sound in knowing
Grandma's house, will always be there waiting for me
Sitting on the old porch swing and listening to the organ grinding in the front room at
Grandma's house, used to be the place where the folks would gather
Grandma's house, with the chickens and the pigs and the cows in the hollar
Grandma's house, take me back 'cause I want to be there
Sitting on the old porch swing and listening to the organ grinding in the front room
At Grandma's house.
